UAB Heart and Vascular Clinic at Acton Road will offer free heart-healthy tailgate screenings Sept. 19; registration is available.

tailgate storyPlaying football involves a certain amount of risk, but what about watching it? TV marathons and tailgate rituals can negatively affect your health in ways many do not realize.

Just in time for football season, the UAB Heart and Vascular Clinic, located at The Kirklin Clinic at Acton Road, 2145 Bonner Way, is offering free heart-healthy tailgate screenings from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19.

Register now to receive free blood pressure, EKG, blood sugar, oxygen saturation, waist circumference and body mass index screenings. Smoking cessation and risk assessment consultations will also be available. UAB cardiologist Alan Gertler, M.D., and Nurse Practitioner Jody Gilchrist will be available to answer quick questions, and door prizes will be given away.

Tips are available for tackling game-day stress, and UAB Medicine has prepared free heart-healthy tailgate recipes to use for the upcoming games. There will be plenty of heart-healthy snacks along with giveaways, door prizes and even a chance to win a tailgate grill.
