UAB to host ICA Southeastern Festival, 13th annual Clarinet Symposium on Feb. 21-22

Clarinetists of all ages and abilities are invited to gather for the International Clarinet Association's Southeastern Festival in conjunction with the 13th annual UAB Clarinet Symposium.

denise gainey streamDenise GaineyThe International Clarinet Association has selected the University of Alabama at Birmingham to host one of three regional festivals Saturday, Feb. 21-Sunday, Feb. 22, in conjunction with the 13th annual UAB Clarinet Symposium.

The UAB Department of Music and Associate Professor of Clarinet Denise Gainey, DMA, will present the ICA Southeastern Festival. Clarinetists of all ages and abilities are invited to gather for a weekend of workshops, master classes, clarinet choirs, recitals and clinics by some of the nation’s finest clarinetists. A free recital with the festival and Blazer clarinet choirs is set for 1:30 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. The recital is open to the public.

More than 30 guest artists will join the festival, including special guest artist Jessica Phillips, acting principal clarinet for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, plus prestigious vendors such as Morrie Backun of Backun Musical Services, Canada. Phillips is on the faculties of Rutgers and Columbia universities and teaches E-flat clarinet at The Juilliard School. jessica phillipsJessica PhillipsThe event is free to all UAB students with valid student ID. All other participants must register, and those age 15 or older must be members of the International Clarinet Association. Registration is $50 for members and $75 for nonmembers, which includes membership. Events will be held in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South, and in other campus venues. UAB is the first all-Steinway piano school in Alabama. The UAB Department of Music presents more than 150 concerts, recitals, master classes and lectures each year — many of them free. The department features 17 ensembles. It is part of the UAB College of Arts and Sciences, home to academic disciplines that include the arts, humanities and sciences.
