More than 400 University of Alabama at Birmingham students joined students from Miles College and Lawson State Community College on Monday, Jan. 19, for a day of service to honor the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
The annual event, organized by the UAB Leadership and Service Council, is held in partnership with Hands On Birmingham. Organizers say the event is a way for students to honor King’s legacy and take part in the National Day of Service held each year in observance of his birthday.
Students teamed up to perform service projects around the Birmingham metro area. Preliminary counts show a combined total of more than 600 student participants. Projects included interaction with the elderly, home repairs and builds, neighborhood cleanups, and more.
Project sites include Brookside Boys and Girls Club, Bessemer City Middle School, Village Creek, South Haven Health and Rehabilitation, George Ward Park, Limestone Park, Grace House, Camp Fletcher, Fairhaven Nursing Home, SIMS Ecoscapes, Ecoscapes-Birmingham Southern College, and Christian Service Mission.
