UAB recognizes top 25 businesses owned or operated by alumni

alumni businesses 2015Click to enlargeThe University of Alabama at Birmingham National Alumni Society has announced the UAB Excellence in Business Top 25 Class of 2015.

The award program is designed to identify, recognize and celebrate the success of the top 25 businesses owned or operated by UAB alumni.

Those nominated are ranked by set award criteria: Each must have been in operation a minimum of 36 months, have verifiable revenue of at least $150,000 in the past 12-month period, and be owned, operated or founded and managed by an alumnus of UAB.

These are the 2015 honorees, recognized during an awards luncheon March 10 in the UAB Alumni House:

  • John Charles Kearney of Kearney Machinery & Supply, Inc., an alumnus of the School of Engineering
  • Santhosh Keshavan of Regions Financial Corporation, an alumnus of the Collat School of Business
  • Gregory A. King of IBERIABANK, an alumnus of the Collat School of Business
  • Bolaji Kukoyi, Ph.D., of Dynamic Civil Solutions, an alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering
  • Eric Meyer of Cahaba Brewing Company, an alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Marc Michelson, M.D., of Michelson Laser Vision Inc. and Alabama Eye & Cataract Center, P.C., an alumnus of the School of Medicine
  • John B.D. Milledge of Action Environmental, an alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education
  • Gwendolyn Goosby Mizell of GSM Developmental, LLC, an alumna of the School of Engineering
  • Mazi Rasulnia, Ph.D., of M Consulting, LLC, and PACK Health, LLC, an alumnus of the Collat School of Business, School of Public Health and the School of Health Professions
  • Eric Robinson of Natchez Community Hospital and Natchez Regional Medical Center, alumnus of the Collat School of Business and the School of Health Professions
  • Amy Smith of Amy Smith State Farm Insurance, an alumna of the Collat School of Business
  • Parvez K. Sultan, M.D., of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons, P.C., an alumnus of the School of Medicine
  • Dr. Bobby Underwood of Dreamland Bar-B-Que, an alumnus of the School of Dentistry
  • Deborah Wesley, MSN, of Children’s of Alabama, an alumna the School of Nursing
  • David W. Whitehurst of Champion Cleaners, an alumnus of the Collat School of Business
  • Robert J. Zasa of ASD Management, an alumnus of the School of Health Professions

The top three fastest-growing companies among the honorees also were recognized: GSM Development, LLC; Action Environmental; and Dynamic Civil Solutions. They were determined based on cumulative growth percentages during the three most recent reporting periods ending Dec. 31, 2014.
