shelby bldgFour graduate students from UAB’s Department of Biomedical Engineering have received funds from the Dr. Jack Lemons Endowed Scholarship to travel to the Society for Biomaterials annual meeting this week in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Grant Alexander, Didarul Bhuyian, Carlos Carmona-Moran and Patrick Hwang will each give a presentation on their research at the conference. Alexander will present on multifunctional endothelium nanomatrix coated stents, Bhuyian will present on synthetic bone grafts, Carmona-Moran will present on improving transdermal drug delivery, and Hwang will present on a hybrid nanosack for pancreatic islet transplantation.

The scholarship’s namesake, Biomedical Engineering Professor Jack Lemons, Ph.D., will also be at the conference, where he is scheduled to receive the 2015 Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal Award, which recognizes excellence and leadership in biomaterials, including basic science and translation to practice.

“This is a great opportunity for these deserving students to present their research at a prominent national conference,” said Timothy Wick, Ph.D., senior associate dean in the School of Engineering. “It will also be nice to have a strong UAB contingent on hand to see Dr. Lemons receive such a prestigious honor.”
