classroomThe UAB School of Education will begin its fall semester of community English classes on Sept. 10. A placement test for new students will be held Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7: 30 p.m. in the School of Education building, 901 13th Street South, Suite 119.

Community English classes are free language classes for anyone age 18 or older who is learning English as an additional language. UAB’s community English classes incorporate reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar, as well as information about local culture and history. Conversational English, informal language used to interact socially with colleagues, acquaintances, friends and family, is an important part of the curriculum.

The classes are hosted by the UAB School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction and serve as a teaching opportunity for the master’s program in teaching English as a Second Language. Classes are taught by graduate students being trained to become teachers of English as an additional language in a college or community setting, as well as abroad.
