The Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation in partnership with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and Elliot’s Light is proud to announce a special evening presentation of “Calendar Girls,” with all proceeds from ticket and calendar sales from the Tuesday, Nov. 10, show going to benefit the UAB Division of Gynecologic Oncology.
Based on a true story and the popular movie with Helen Mirren, “Calendar Girls” tells the story of eight women of a certain age in Britain who agree to pose artistically and tastefully “nude” for a calendar to raise funds for their local hospital’s cancer wing. It was the fastest-selling play in London, and now the Virginia Samford Theatre has special permission to perform it in the United States. It has some adult content and language.
Each year in the United States, more than 21,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and about 13,000 women die of the disease. There is no early detection test for ovarian cancer, and as a result only 19 percent of women are diagnosed in the early stages. When ovarian cancer is detected early, before it has spread beyond the ovaries, more than 90 percent of women will survive longer than five years.
Although the show will run from Nov. 5-22, the specific presentation with proceeds benefiting the UAB Division of Gynecologic Oncology will be only Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Samford Theatre, 1116 26th Street South, 35205.Tickets will be specially priced for the evening at $100, $75 and $50.
