The University of Alabama at Birmingham is partnering with Zipcar to provide vehicles on campus for students, faculty and staff ages 18 and older, as well as members of the local community ages 21 and over. The program officially launched today with two vehicles available for reservation.
“This self-service transportation option not only offers our students, faculty and staff a new cost-efficient way to get around on or off campus, but also supports UAB’s sustainability efforts to reduce the need for personal vehicles on campus,” said André Davis, director of Parking and Transportation. “We are starting the program with two vehicles, but our plan is to have as many cars on campus as needed to make the program successful.”
The vehicles, a Ford Focus and a Toyota Corolla, have designated parking spots at Blazer Circle, which is located behind Blazer Hall. The vehicles can be reserved online or through the Zipcar mobile app. They can be reserved by the hour or day. There is no line or paperwork.
“We’re thrilled to team up with UAB to bring Zipcar’s convenient, on-demand transportation service to campus,” said Katelyn Bushey, director of University Programs, Zipcar. “Zipcar offers all the benefits of owning a car without the hassles that come along with it, like circling for a parking spot before class, paying for gas or worrying about oil changes.”
The annual membership fee for UAB students and employees is $15 for the first year and $25 per year afterward. The hourly rate starts at $7.50, daily $69 and overnight $35. The hourly rate is all-inclusive; each car comes with a prepaid fuel card. The first 180 miles are free, but users are charged $0.20 for every mile exceeding that limit.
