UAB-themed locomotive blazes into Birmingham

Birmingham residents should be on the lookout for the UAB locomotive.

Birmingham-area railways welcomed 100 tons of pride from the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Friday, July 27, with the unveiling of a UAB-themed locomotive. The Watco locomotive is adorned in green and gold and features the Birmingham skyline and Blaze.

“In recent years, UAB has intensified efforts to propel our brand,” said UAB Provost Pam Benoit, Ph.D. “We are deeply grateful for Watco’s generosity, partnership and artistry in providing this striking icon of UAB spirit. What is a more apt symbol for UAB than a locomotive — always on the move and forging forward to connect people and communities in common aims?”

Watco, an international transportation and logistics service provider, designed and painted the UAB locomotive to highlight its commitment to the Birmingham community and its continued economic growth. The UAB locomotive will travel 96 miles of track around the Greater Birmingham area.
