Works created by students using a variety of artistic disciplines will be featured in a new bachelor of fine arts show at UAB’s Visual Arts Gallery.
The bachelor of fine arts degree is the undergraduate professional degree for studio art in the Department of Art and Art History. These exhibitions are the pinnacle of achievement for those students accepted into the BFA program at UAB. The gallery will host two BFA shows to accommodate the number of graduates exhibiting.
The first collection of works will be on show April 13-27, 2012. It will feature works by Chelsea Culpepper, Emily Johnson, Mary McCann, Melissa Precise and Claire Spollen. A free opening reception is planned from 5 to 9 p.m. April 13 in at the gallery, 900 13th St. South.
Culpepper will present mixed-media installations that explore the fragility and delicacy of life and identity. Johnson’s sculptures investigate the self-constructed barriers people use to shield themselves from their surroundings. McCann’s paintings explore her cultural roots and the notion of home. Precise’s large, site-specific installations are studies of opposing forces. Spollen is a printmaker whose work examines the structures of human relationships and the roles people assume to keep those structures intact.
