Norman Krieger to open new UAB Piano Series with Oct. 25 performance

The UAB Piano Series brings the world’s finest pianists to Birmingham. Krieger will perform a program of works by Beethoven, Lazarof, Chopin and Brahms.

norman kreigerPianist Norman Krieger is set to perform Sunday, Oct. 25, to kick off the University of Alabama at Birmingham Piano Series for 2015-2016.

The College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Music presents the UAB Piano Series. Founded and directed by UAB professor of piano and artist-in-residence Yakov Kasman, the series brings the world’s greatest pianists to Birmingham.

On the program for his UAB recital is Beethoven’s Sonata Op 31. No 2 “Tempest”; Henri Lazarof’s Three Preludes (2008); Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 9. No 1, Étude Op. 25 No. 1 and Étude Op. 10 No. 12; and Brahms’ Sonata Op 1.

The performance is set for 4 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Tickets are $15 general admission; $5 for UAB students. Call 205-975-2787 for tickets.

A champion of contemporary music, Krieger features the music of John Adams, Leonard Bernstein, John Corigliano, Daniel Brewbaker, Judith St. Croix, Lukas Foss and Lowell Liebermann among his active repertoire. Krieger regularly appears with the major orchestras of North America, and has also been heard as guest soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Prague’s Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Turkey’s Presidential Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand’s Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Taiwan’s National Symphony Orchestra.
