University Professor of Music Henry Panion III, Ph.D., teaches multimedia production, orchestration and arrangement, and is director of the UAB Music Technology program. He holds degrees in music education and music theory from Alabama A&M University and Ohio State University, respectively.
He is best known for his work as conductor and arranger for superstar Stevie Wonder, for whose performances and recordings Panion has led many of the world’s most notable orchestras. Panion has also worked with artists including Kirk Franklin, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Winans, and American Idol winners Carrie Underwood and Ruben Studdard. Panion and orchestra performed with the Blind Boys in BET’s Centric Salute to Selma for a crowd of an estimated 100,000 people, in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma. Panion has won two Grammy Awards, two Dove Awards and many other national music awards. Panion was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1995.
