Curry is committed to improving access and quality in rural health care by reducing the shortage of healthcare providers. His research has found that the combination of increasing the number of primary care physicians and modifying health care models in rural parts of Alabama diminishes health disparities, such as maternal and infant mortality rates. He has worked with the state and insurance providers to develop programs to increase the number of doctors in order to meet the needs of each county's residents.

Curry knows firsthand what it is like to practice in a rural community. He was a primary care physician for 17 years in Pickens County,  where he was one of only a few doctors in an impoverished, underserved county that managed to build an effective rural health system. He is able to talk about the healthcare issues plaguing rural America, especially in the Black Belt, and is an expert in how federal, state and local governments can work with healthcare providers to improve access to medical care.
