The UAB Callahan Eye Hospital opened its remodeled emergency department and newly renovated Lions Eye Clinic at a ceremony on Thursday, July 31, 2014. The remodeled space includes a new diagnostic center, featuring a new optical coherence tomography, or OCT, system. OCT captures three-dimensional images of the eye.

The newly renovated space allows for better management of patients in the emergency department and at the Lions Eye Clinic, while providing additional emergency capability. The space has all new exam chairs, including two designed to allow wheelchair access, and new diagnostic equipment, including a LENSTAR LS 900® A-scan; new phoropters, also known as refractors; and a device called a Pentacam®, which allows for precise and complete measurement and analysis of the center of the cornea.

Special thanks to the donors who funded the renovation: the Carl G. and Pauline B. Buck Trust, the Eyesight Foundation of Alabama, Lions International and Lions Clubs of Alabama, International Retinal Research Foundation, and a Cy Pres Award.
