UAB Psychology honors two with Distinguished Alumni Awards

UAB's Department of Psychology will honor two graduates with Distinguished Alumni Awards this year.

Robert R. Edwards, Ph.D., instructor of psychiatry and anesthesiology at Harvard School of Medicine and adjunct professor in psychiatry at Brigham & Women's Hospital, will receive the 2010 UAB Department of Psychology Distinguished Scholar Alumni Award. Robin H. Gurwitch, Ph.D., professor in the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, will receive the 2010 UAB Department of Psychology Distinguished Service Alumni Award.

"These exceptional individuals bring pride and distinction to UAB and to the Department of Psychology, and they are outstanding role models for current and future students," says David Schwebel, Ph.D., psychology professor and chair of the selection committee.

The Distinguished Scholar award recognizes alumni for groundbreaking scientific research and scholarly accomplishments. The Distinguished Service award recognizes alumni for exemplary leadership, outstanding human qualities and contributions to the university and society. 

Plaques will be awarded during the department's Homecoming activities Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 in the Spencer Honors House, 1190 10th Ave. South. The event is open to UAB students, faculty and psychology alumni. Call the UAB Department of Psychology at 205-934-8728 for more details.
