Gordon Fisher, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UAB School of Education Department of Human Studies, has been named a fellow by the American College of Sports Medicine, the world’s largest sports medicine and exercise science organization.
The honor recognizes Fisher’s professional achievements in sports medicine through education, published works, professional practice and contributions to its goals.
Fisher’s research focus is developing diet and exercise strategies to reduce the prevalence of metabolic and cardiovascular complications associated with Type 2 diabetes. He is specifically interested in determining the extent to which mitochondrial bioenergetics dysfunction, excess reactive oxygen species production and low-grade chronic inflammation contribute to the pathogenesis of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.
Fisher holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. He is also an associate scientist in the UAB Nutrition and Obesity Research Center, UAB Comprehensive Center for Aging, UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center and the UAB Center for Exercise Medicine.
Fisher and other new fellows will be recognized at the ACSM’s 63rd annual meeting in May.
