  • August 08, 2012

Lister Hill Library at UAB hosts major community health fair.

Information is good medicine, says the staff at the Lister Hill Library for the Health Sciences, the main medical/health library for the University of Alabama at Birmingham. That’s the theme for the library’s third annual Healthfest, a health screening for the community, set this year for Tuesday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The library anticipates 400 participants will attend Healthfest, to be held in the library at 1700 University Blvd. Screenings and services to be offered will include blood-pressure and blood-sugar screenings,  hearing and vision screenings, sickle-cell testing, massages and HIV testing. The event also will include a blood drive.

“The health information provided will enable participants to make better decisions concerning their own personal health needs,” said Michael S. Fitts, an assistant professor and liaison for public health at the library. “The focus of Healthfest is to promote health awareness at UAB and in the community.”

The Lister Hill Library is the largest biomedical library in Alabama and one of the leading such libraries in the South, offering a variety of services and information through its website, www.uab.edu/lister/. The library catalog is available online and contains its print, electronic and media holdings.
