The safety barriers have been staples at NASCAR and IndyCar tracks in the United States for more than a decade. The SAFER Barrier was developed by University of Alabama at Birmingham mechanical engineering professor Dr. Dean Sicking after the death of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt in 2001.
