UAB Hematology Oncology now offers cancer care in Bessemer

New clinic provides high-quality care with infusion therapy to Bessemer and Tuscaloosa-area communities.

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Medicine is expanding its medical oncology services to the Bessemer area with the opening of its Hematology Oncology West clinic today.

HEM_ONC_clinic_sIn an effort to provide exceptional cancer care and enable patients to receive it closer to home, a newly renovated facility, located at 915 Medical Center Drive in Bessemer, will offer access to state-of-the-art infusion therapy, with personal care provided to each patient.

Two supervising UAB faculty physicians will be available at the location:

  • Guru Sonpavde, M.D., is medical director of the Hematology Oncology West clinic and an associate professor of medicine. He specializes in prostate, kidney and bladder cancer. He is an international leader in the urological medical oncology community.
  • Susmitha Nimmagadda, M.D., is an assistant professor of medicine. She has a strong clinical interest in breast cancer, colorectal cancer and lymphoma.

“This clinic offers patients from the Tuscaloosa and Bessemer areas the same innovative, world-class care they would get in downtown Birmingham,” said Boris Pasche, M.D., Ph.D., director of the UAB Division of Hematology and Oncology. “Our outstanding medical team brings a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer and bridges the gap between advanced technology and compassionate care. Convenience is a big part of that, because during a difficult time patients want to be in a place of comfort. They want to be close to home, near their families, and they don’t want to travel long before and after treatment.”

Patients can schedule an appointment by contacting UAB HealthFinder at 205-934-9999 or online at www.uabmedicine.org.
