Researcher receives prestigious award for discoveries in applied psychology

The American Psychology Association recognizes Schwebel’s research in child injury prevention with the Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Research.

DavidSchweblejoomlaDavid Schwebel, Ph.D.David Schwebel, Ph.D., associate dean of Research in the College of Arts and Sciences and professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was awarded the 2019 Distinguished Professional Contributions to Applied Research. The American Psychological Association gives the award annually to a psychologist whose research has led to important discoveries or developments in the field of applied psychology.

Postgraduation from the University of Iowa, where he earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. in clinical psychology, Schwebel completed his residency at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Upon completion of his residency in 2000, he became an assistant professor of psychology at UAB. His research focus is understanding and preventing unintentional injuries in children, adolescents and adults, and he has published more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts on these and related topics.

Schwebel’s other honors include being named a Woodrow Wilson Scholar, Fulbright Award winner and fellow of the American Psychological Association, and receiving the Dennis Drotar Distinguished Research Award from the Society of Pediatric Psychology. He says it is “an honor to be the recipient of this award among other truly influential figures in my field of research.” Recipients of this award are invited to present an address at APA’s convention, which will be held Aug. 8-11 in Chicago.
