Girkin joins editorial board for leading ophthalmology journal

Girkin will serve on the editorial board of an international association's journal.

Girkin, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been named to the editorial board of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, the official journal of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.  ARVO is an international organization dedicated to encouraging and assisting research, training, publication and dissemination of knowledge in vision and ophthalmology. The journal publishes online several times a month.

Girkin, who holds the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology, is director of the UAB Glaucoma Service and Optic Nerve Imaging Center and chief medical officer for the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital.

An internationally recognized expert in glaucoma, Girkin currently is secretary for the American Glaucoma Society and chairs the Glaucoma Program Committee for Association for Vision Research and Ophthalmology for 2012. He has been awarded the American Glaucoma Society Clinician-Scientist Award for 2003 and 2004, the Research to Prevent Blindness Physician-Scientist Award for 2005 and the Ronald Lowe Medal for 2008 and has been selected as one of the "Best Doctors in America" yearly from 2003 to 2012.
