University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) professor Trygve Tollefsbol, Ph.D., D.O., has been named series editor of “Translational Epigenetics,” published by Elsevier.
Tollefsbol, a biology professor in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences, created the series and has the overall responsibility for the content, supervision and scientific quality. He will oversee publishing of the first 15 books with the first expected to be released Nov. 2013. Book one, provisionally titled “Epigenetic gene expression and regulation,” will cover epigenetic mechanisms, in other words, the role epigenetics plays in the regulation of gene activity. Epigenetics is the study of mechanisms that modify but do not change the sequence of DNA.
Tollefsbol previously co-authored and edited “Handbook of Epigenetics: The New Molecular and Medical Genetics,” which he says is the first fully comprehensive analysis of epigenetics. He also published a research review in the journal “Clinical Epigenetics” that found that compounds in foods like broccoli and cabbage could help reverse or prevent cancers and other aging-related diseases. In addition, he co-authored and edited books on epigenetics in human disease, aging epigenetics and epigenetic protocols; he is currently working on a book titled “Transgenerational Epigenetics.”
