UAB is the only site in the state of Alabama to perform Prostate HDR Brachytherapy treatment. The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Radiation Oncology performed a high dose rate (HDR) prostate brachytherapy treatment for the first time in 20 years during the first quarter of 2022.
HDR prostate treatment is a form of brachytherapy, which is an internal radiation treatment modality. During the process, a catheter is inserted into the affected region to focus treatment in a very precise way to kill cancer cells.
According to Samuel Marcrom, M.D., an assistant professor in the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology, the department has a rich history of being a leader in technological advancements, including its vibrant and growing brachytherapy program.
“I am excited that we are now the only center in the state of Alabama to offer high dose rate prostate brachytherapy, a major advancement for patients in our region,” Marcrom said. “This is a form of internal radiation that offers unparalleled cancer targeting in a very personalized manner. The technique can be utilized in combination with external radiation or as a stand-alone treatment. Many men are excellent candidates for this treatment option, and in some men, prostate brachytherapy is the best treatment option.”
