Casazza to study link between abdominal fat and breast cancer

  • May 25, 2011

Krista Casazza, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences in the School of Health Professions, has won a $40,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to examine potential links between early childhood abdominal fat and the later development of breast cancer.

The study’s aim is to provide a model of the way early-childhood abdominal fat and subsequent changes in hormones and inflammatory markers may predispose or contribute to the development of cancer later in life.

Casazza also recently was awarded The Endocrine Society 2011 Early Investigators Award, which provides recognition and funding to promote career development for basic and clinical endocrine investigators.
