Julia Gohlke, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health, has been given the 2013 Future Leader Award from the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) for her research in the nutrition field. Her proposed research topic, “Nutrition-toxicity interactions in Daphnia pulex, developing an alternative model organism for early life exposures,” has been funded for two years.
Gohlke’s application was selected out of a field of nine finalists by a review panel that comprised scientists from universities and industry. Her application showed “leadership potential and promising research in the field of nutrition,” according to panel assessments.
A formal announcement of Gohlke’s award will be made at the 2013 ILSI Annual Meeting in Miami, Fla., Jan. 18-23.
UAB has a history of several ILSI awardees, including Sarah Morgan, Tim Nagy, Michael Goran, David Allison, Jamy Ard and Marie-Pierre St.-Onge. ILSI is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve public health by facilitating collaboration among academia, government and industry.
