UAB School of Nursing associate professor and Banton Endowed Professor Patricia A. Patrician, Ph.D., has received a $450,000 grant from the U.S. Department of DefenseTriService Nursing Research Program to conduct a two year study, “Workload Intensity, the Nursing Practice Environment, and Adverse Events.”

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of the intensity of nurses’ work -— as measured by patient acuity and an index of admissions, discharges, and transfers — and the nursing practice environment, on the relationship between staffing and outcomes at the shift level.
