The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Institute for Human Rights will be hosting three separate events with guest speakers discussing important contemporary political issues in the United States and abroad. The trio of lectures will cover a broad spectrum of issues ranging from the 2016 presidential election to the ethnic cleansing crisis in Myanmar.
Partnering with UAB’s Department of Government, IHR will host Rachel Bitecofer, Ph.D., assistant director of the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University. Bitecofer will speak Thursday, Nov. 9, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Edge of Chaos on the fourth floor of Lister Hill Library, 1700 University Blvd. Her presentation will reflect on the unprecedented 2016 presidential election and what it may mean for future U.S. elections.
IHR will also host Wakar Uddin, Ph.D., professor at Penn State University and director general of the Arakan Rohingya Union. Uddin will present a lecture on the ethnic cleansing and refugee crisis in Myanmar, which has driven more than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims out of the Buddhist-majority country since August. Uddin will speak at the Edge of Chaos on Monday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
The following evening, IHR welcomes James Zogby, Ph.D., founder and president of the Arab American Institute, for a lecture titled “What We Don’t Know (But Need To Know) About the Arab World Today.” Zogby will present his lecture Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the UAB Alumni House, 1301 10th Ave. South.
All three events are free and open to the public. UAB’s Institute for Human Rights is an internationally renowned platform that prepares, transforms and supports the leaders of the global human rights community by creating innovative educational programs, research initiatives and outreach solutions.
