Mr. and Ms. UAB 2011 finalists announced

Ten UAB students will be in the running for the title of Mr. and Ms. UAB.

The UAB National Alumni Society has named the ten finalists for Mr. and Ms. UAB 2011.

MrMs_UAB_2011The thirty year old program recognizes outstanding male and female students who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, leadership, campus and community involvement, and overall enthusiasm for UAB.

The winners of the Mr. and Ms. UAB competition will each receive an increased $2,500 scholarship and serve as representatives of UAB. For the first time, the first alternates will also receive a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. 

The Ms. UAB finalists are:

Ayushi Amin, senior of Southaven, Miss., is majoring in psychology. She was named Outstanding Student Leader of the Year. She is chair of Leadership and Service Council, USGA Elections Committee Manager, and volunteers with Big Brother Big Sister. She is the daughter of Jayshree Amin.

Stephanie Arana, junior of Auburn, is majoring in biology.  She is a recipient of the God at the Speed of Light Scholarship. She is a UAB Ambassador, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta and volunteers with Outreach Abroad. She is the daughter of Esau and Julia Arana.

Noelle Cheeks, junior of Jackson, Miss., is majoring in healthcare management. She is a recipient of the Blazer Pride Scholarship, serves as an orientation leader and is a resident assistant at Blazer Hall. She volunteers with Into the Streets and Mitchell’s Place. She is the daughter of Rosalyn Walters and Jeffrey Holiday.

Meghan McClain, junior of New Martinsville, W. Va., is majoring in international studies. She is a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, serves as USGA Programs Chair, and volunteers with Outreach Abroad. She is the daughter of Doug and Susan McClain.

Elizabeth Simbeck, junior from Killen, majoring in broadcast communications. She is a recipient of the Golden Excellence Scholarship. She is a Trail Blazer, has a show on BlazeRadio, is an intern for the Rick and Bubba Show and volunteers with student leadership at Shades Mountain Baptist Church. She is the daughter of Damien and Regina Simbeck.

The Mr. UAB finalists are:

Graham Holladay, junior of Spanish Fort, is majoring in mechanical engineering. He is a recipient of the Dupuis Leadership Scholars Scholarship. He is Vice President of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, is a tour guide for the Engineering Department, and volunteers as a Site Leader with Into the Streets. He is the Son of Philip and Lisa Holladay.

Mallick Hossain, junior of Gadsden, is majoring in mathematics and philosophy. He is a Goldwater Scholar, is a member of the 2011 National Ethics Bowl Championship team, and plays with the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra. He is the son of Sajjad and Monika Hossain.

Ty Malugani, junior of Fairhope, is majoring in history. He is a recipient of the Golden Excellence Scholarship, is a member of the University Honors Program and volunteers at Arrington Middle School. He is the son of Richard and Ellen Malugani.

Jared Sabia, senior of Savannah, Ga., is majoring in history. He is in the University Honors Program, was named Greek Man of the Year in 2010, is president of the Interfraternity Council, and is a Site Leader with Into the Streets.  He is the son of John and Yvonne Sabia.

Andrew Vines, junior of Hoover, is majoring in accounting. He is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, he is a TrailBlazer, serves on the University Athletic Advisory Committee and volunteers with Into the Streets. He is the son of Donny and Donna Vines.
