UAB announces record total enrollment and increased ACT scores

UAB announces record enrollment which includes increases in total enrollment, as well as enrollment among freshmen, undergrads, master’s students and transfers.

Fall enrollment at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is at a record high for the fifth consecutive year; figures released today show a year-to-year total enrollment increase of 3.6 percent, up to 18,568 from 17,999 in the fall of 2012.

Fall_2013_enrollment_imagenew_sIncreases were seen from 2012 among freshmen, transfer students, undergraduates and master’s-level students: the freshmen class increased 5.8 percent to 1,773 students; incoming transfer students increased 10 percent to 1,397; and master’s-level enrollment increased 8.7 percent to 4,650 students.

“We implemented several initiatives to increase enrollment that include partnerships with high schools and community colleges and expanding our honors college, and I am excited that we have created more opportunities for those seeking a world-class education,” said UAB President Ray L. Watts. “I am proud to note that we increased enrollment while continuing to attract top-quality students.”

In 2013, the average ACT score for the freshman class increased to 25 from 24.5 in 2012, and the average GPA increased to 3.62 from 3.54. UAB’s freshman enrollment is the largest in its history and increased for a fifth consecutive year, with gains among in-state students, as well as those from other states, other countries and Jefferson County, Ala.

Earlier this year, the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved plans to build a new student residence hall to meet growing demand. Other construction projects aimed to improve the student experience include a new student center and a health and wellness center.

With 1,225 freshmen (69.1 percent) now living on-campus, UAB housing is at capacity.
