UAB fraternity lauded as chapter of the year

The Alphas were honored for contributing more than 4,123 hours to community service and hosting more than 50 events and service projects.
fraternityThe Iota Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. has been named the Regional Chapter of the Year as well as the National College Chapter of the Year by its fraternity. The men, who also received six UAB Greek awards this year, were also recognized by officials with the City of Birmingham, state of Alabama and U.S. Congress.The Alphas, whose motto is “First of All, Servants of All,” were honored for contributing more than 4,123 hours to community service, hosting more than 50 events and service projects, and donating approximately $6,500 to philanthropic organizations and causes. In addition, they donated 13,900 books with a retail value of more than $56,000 to children at seven Birmingham-area elementary schools.

Besides being honored for community work, members have been recipients of various scholarships, including the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship and the United Negro College Fund Merck Fellowship.
