Spring health care electives now available

The courses are ideal for students entering a health profession, those who wish to learn more about health care or those enrolled in a health profession program.
The University of Alabama at BirminghamDepartment of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences in the School of Health Professions offers health-care-focused electives open to undergraduate, graduate and nondegree-seeking students. The courses are ideal for students entering a health profession, those who wish to learn more about health care or those enrolled in a health profession program. Courses offered include:

  • CDS 400/500: Fundamentals of Phlebotomy and Body Fluids (1 hour): In-depth course covering safety, intravenous access and maintenance, intramuscular subcutaneous methods, capillary puncture, and more. (online)
  • CDS 405/605: Survival Spanish for Health Professions (1 hour): Basic vocabulary, useful questions and expressions in Spanish that are necessary to communicate in practical health care situations. (online)
  • CDS 420/520: Competencies in Genetics for Health Professions (2 hours): Core competencies in genetics to prepare students to integrate genetics knowledge and skills into routine health care. (Tue 10-11:50 a.m.)
  • CDS 550: Introduction to Medical History and Physical Examination (3 hours): Introduction to conduct a comprehensive medical history, perform a physical examination, and report findings in systematic and concise format. (Tue/Thu 4-5:50 p.m.)
