Hispanic influences, challenges focus of heritage month events

The University of Alabama at Birmingham will join in celebrating Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month from Sept. 15-Oct. 15 with campus and community events.

John Quiñones, “ABC News” correspondent and host of “Primetime: What Would You Do?” will give the keynote address on growing up Latino in America at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Alys Stephens Center’s Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South.

Other events include a screening of “Quilombo,” the 1984 Brazilian film about a plantation slave revolt, as part of the International Film Series on Sept. 17, and three Heritage Month Lunches, on Sept. 19, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3. A full schedule of events is online.
