University of Alabama at Birmingham students Nole Jones and Johnathon Lyons won awards at the Southeastern Regional National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions held March 27-28 at Auburn University.

Both are students in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences Department of Music. SERNATS competitors are drawn from schools in Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Lyons, a bass-baritone from Northport, won first place in his division of adult classical college men. For the third competition in a row, the senior was the only singer in his division who advanced to the finals, says Department of Music Chair Paul Mosteller.

Jones, a baritone from Prattville, won second place in the third-year classical college men’s division, and first place in the third-year college musical theater men’s division.

They are now eligible for the national student auditions, which will be held in June in Greensboro, North Carolina. Both are students of Associate Professor of Voice Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk and Wanda Yang Temko, adjunct instructor of voice.
