painting at uabThe Birmingham Public Library will present an exhibition of artworks by students of University of Alabama at Birmingham Professor of Painting Gary Chapman from Nov. 15-Dec. 31.

“Painting at UAB: The Students of Gary Chapman” will be on display in the Fourth Floor Gallery in the East Building of the Central Library, located at 2100 Park Place. A free opening reception is scheduled from 2:30-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15.

The exhibition will highlight the diverse work created in the UAB College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Art and Art History painting studio under Chapman’s guidance.

While Chapman teaches a highly structured, somewhat traditional beginning painting class, he guides each of his students in individually focused research in intermediate and advanced classes.

“In the painting courses at UAB, students are challenged to research artists, writers and thinkers with unique yet related interests,” Chapman said. “Students are also challenged to think introspectively on the events and persons in their lives that have helped shape who they are and who they are becoming; this ultimately helps the student to develop an authentic, personal aesthetic and conceptual purpose. By exploring and experimenting with the medium, this dynamic group of painters has developed unique vision through paint.”

Participating students are Mia Badham of Birmingham, Annabelle DeCamillis of Hoover, Claire Godbee of Montgomery, Katelyn Ledford of Birmingham, Mary McCann (’12) of Birmingham, UAB DAAH Adjunct Professor Lanette Parker (ʼ11) of Gardendale, Nick Petelos (’11) of Mountain Brook, Hannah Rettig of Helena, Jonathan Riordan (’14) of Irondale and Tahla Tessler of Ensley.
