The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) faculty member Frank A. Franklin, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., as Professor Emeritus at its Feb. 5 meeting.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) faculty member Frank A. Franklin, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., as Professor Emeritus at its Feb. 5 meeting.

A renowned expert in public health, Franklin is a pediatrician and nutritionist who has done extensive work in the allied health fields of gastroenterology, weight management and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. He has served as a lead and collaborative investigator in many research projects that focus on children, adolescents and families, and that exemplify a multidisciplinary approach to basic science, field study, clinical trials and community-based intervention.

Franklin received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1968 from the University of Maryland, his Master of Public Health degree in 1971 from Harvard University and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism in 1978 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined UAB in 1990 as a professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Nutrition Sciences and Maternal and Child Health. In 2006 Franklin was appointed chair of the Department of Maternal and Child Health in the UAB School of Public Health.
