Pam Fordham, DSN, CRNP, FAANP, Assistant Professor in the Department of Family/Child Health and Caregiving, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing received a $713, 944, three year competitive continuation award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA) for a project entitled “A Distance Learning Culturally Competent ANP/GNP Program for the Rural and Underserved Populations.”  This project provides for the continuation and enhancement of the School’s current Dual Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner program (ANP/GNP) to meet the disparate health care needs of the aging in a culturally competent manner. Over the continuation period, the objective of this project is to extend the current distance learning program, refine current courses in the program, continue to integrate health disparities and cultural competence content into the courses, continue to recruit, enroll, and retain nurses from rural and medically underserved counties, and involve and link students with community based care agencies in rural and underserved areas.
