Jim Raper is proud to be a nurse practitioner and to have been the first nurse to direct a medical clinic at UAB. This, he said, has afforded him the opportunity to incorporate advanced practice nursing into every aspect of the 1917 Clinic.

Get to know Jim Raper a tenured Professor in the UAB School of Medicine, the only nurse with a primary appointment, and holds a secondary appointment in the School of Nursing.

The UAB School of Nursing is leading the way in the campus-wide transition to a new learning management system for distance-accessible courses. The University made the switch to Canvas based on the School's successful pilot run in fall 2013.

Eye-opening research

Rosetta Norman never thought she would end up with a passion for research or taking care of adults. The second-semester BSN student plans to be a NICU nurse once she graduates, but joining a faculty member’s research team has opened her eyes to more career possibilities and might just change her mind about the age of her patients.
UAB Hospital Interim Chief Nursing Officer Terri Poe, who earned her BSN from the UAB School of Nursing in 1986 and her DNP from the School in 2013, has been named the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Associate Vice President.

Leading transitional care

Imagine being discharged from the hospital knowing you suffer from heart failure, and you have no access to continuing outpatient care. What do you do when you’re in trouble—go to the emergency room, get readmitted, or worse, do nothing? It’s a recipe for a vicious cycle that could have disastrous outcomes.
Two UAB School of Nursing faculty members have been selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as 2014 Scholars and Fellows. C. Ann Gakumo, PhD, RN, has been named an RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholar and Joy P. Deupree, PhD, MSN, APRN-BC, has been named an RWJF Executive Nurse Fellow.
Using a four-year, $1 million gift from The Daniel Foundation of Alabama, the UAB School of Nursing is creating a far-reaching program designed to open up more health care access in medically underserved rural Alabama.

During a nursing career spanning more than 30 years, Joanne Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN, has held numerous positions in clinical and academic nursing, but she has always maintained a strong commitment to professional organizations—including serving as a member of the board of the American Academy of Nursing and as a committee chair with the American Nurses Association. Her most recent board position, however, might be her most high-profile yet—chair of the board of AARP, formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, one of the largest and most influential interest groups in the country.

Saturday, April 5, 2014 young breast cancer survivors, their spouses, and children gathered at the UAB School of Nursing to attend the second annual Young Breast Cancer Survivors Network (YBCSN) Workshop. The workshop was specially designed to help improve the quality of life for young breast cancer survivors and their loved ones through education, personal support and networking.

The UAB School of Dentistry, in partnership with the UAB schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions and Optometry, received a $150,000 renewal grant through the DentaQuest Foundation to train professional students to work collaboratively and recognize when they should make referrals to other professions.
A two-year, $150,000 grant from the Women's Breast Health Fund will help improve the quality of life for young breast-cancer survivors and their loved ones through education, personal support, distance learning and networking.

School of Nursing has received a four-year, $1.2 million grant from the Health Services Resources Administration to develop a program to help veterans with military medical experience more easily transition into the nursing profession.

Deuk Kyung Kim and Seung Min-Lee, nursing students from Wonju College of Medicine, at Yonsei University, South Korea, participated in a competitive two-week exchange program at the UAB School of Nursing.  The students worked closely with mentor Dr. Youngshook Han from February 3 until February 14.

More than 500 volunteers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, the UAB School of Nursing, Cahaba Valley Health Care, and other local dentists, health agencies and companies cared for more than 350 people today as part of the first UAB Dentistry Cares Community Day.

Florence Nightingale, indisputably the founder of modern nursing, left countless gifts to her profession, including a collection of 50 letters and more preserved in the UAB Historical Collections. Copies of these are on permanent exhibit in the UAB School of Nursing.
