UAB School of Nursing Honors Program Co-Director and Associate Professor Sigrid Ladores, PhD, RN, PNP, CNE, has been recognized for her excellence in mentorship by two University of Alabama at Birmingham groups.
Ladores has been named a recipient of both the 2019 Graduate Dean’s Excellence in Mentorship Award and Minority Health Research Center (MHRC) Excellence in Mentorship Award.
Both awards recognize faculty members who have inspired, motivated and seen exceptional accomplishments as mentors of graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows, and who have contributed to the career development and retention of students and scholars.
Ladores is one of 10 UAB faculty members to receive the Graduate Dean’s Excellence in Mentorship Award at a recognition ceremony was held April 2. She is one of three to receive recognition from the MHRC.
“Mentorship is something I am very dedicated to because I know how important it is and how beneficial it can be in your career and life,” Ladores said. “I’m so honored to receive this mentorship award. To me, the best part of being a mentor is seeing your mentees, your students, your trainees, achieve bigger and better things than you, as the mentor, could even see for yourself.”
During the recognition ceremony at the UAB National Alumni Society House, Ladores was presented with a memento as well as a framed certificate and copy of her nomination letters.
“My goal as a mentor is to provide guidance and help others reach success, and to celebrate those successes,” Ladores said. “My mentees are my shining stars, and every time they get an award, I am the proudest person. It makes me feel so honored to be part of their journey.”
Ladores joined the School of Nursing in 2014 after 11 years as an instructor at University of Central Florida College of Nursing and became co-director of the Nursing Honors Program in 2018. She is a pediatric nurse practitioner who is investigating reproductive health concerns in adolescents and young adults with chronic illness. Her research has been presented at local, national and international conferences. Ladores is also a leader in the Philippine Nurses Association of America.
Ladores is the 10th UAB School of Nursing faculty member, including eight current faculty members, to receive the Dean’s Award for mentorship. She joins Professor and Marie L. O’Koren Endowed Chair Marie Bakitas, DNSC, CRPN, NP-C, AOCN, ACHPN, FAAN (2017); Associate Professor and Coordinator of the School’s Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) Program Karen Heaton, PhD, CRNP, FNP-BC, FAAN (2017); Professor Marti Rice, PhD, RN, FAAN (2017); Professor Jacqueline Moss, PhD, RN, FAAN (2016), Assistant Professor Martha Dawson, DNP, RN, FACHE (2014), Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Linda Moneyham, PhD, RN, FAAN (2011); and Professor David Vance, PhD, MGS, MS (2010); and retired faculty member, former Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program Director and Professor Linda Roussel, PhD, RN, CNL, CCRN, NEA-BC, FAAN (2017), and Rachel Z. Booth Endowed Chair in Nursing and Professor Patricia A. Patrician, PhD, RN, FAAN (2018) as those from the School to receive the award since its inception in 2009.
She is also the third faculty member to receive the MHRC award, joining Bakitas (2016), Moneyham (2010) and the late Dr. Karen Meneses, PhD, RN, FAAN (2009). Meneses was also Ladores’ mentor.
“I am very thankful for all of my mentors, including former professors from University of Pennsylvania and University of Central Florida, and former award recipients Dr. Bakitas and Dr. Meneses, who showed me the importance and value of positive mentor-mentee relationships. I honor them through these two awards,” Ladores said.
