Three UAB School of Nursing faculty members, alumna honored by NPAA

NPAAThree faculty members and an alumna from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing received distinguished awards from the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama (NPAA) at its recent 8th Annual conference. Awards recipients were selected based on nominee's overall achievements, leadership qualities, and the implementation of specific efforts and programs to improve health care.

Nursing Instructor and Alumna Brenda Iddins, DNP, CRNP, received the Central Alabama Nurse Practitioner Award presented for excellence in nursing practice. Iddins is an advanced practice nurse licensed in Alabama and Tennessee. She was recognized for her contributions to practice at M-Power Ministries located in Birmingham, Alabama.

Assistant Professor Aimee Holland, DNP, WHNP-BC, NP-C, RD, received the Central Alabama Nurse Educator Award. Her expertise in women's health is utilized performing gynecology procedures, contraceptive counseling, and preventive services as faculty in the UAB School of Nursing.

Alumna Nancy Turnham, DNP, CRNP, received the Most Outstanding Nurse Practitioner Award for Alabama award. Presented each year for extraordinary leadership and outstanding clinical practice, Turnham maintains a full time practice site in Dothan, Ala. In addition she is as an Assistant Professor of Community and Mental Health Nursing in the University of South Alabama College of Nursing.

Assistant Professor and Alumna Joy Deupree, PhD, MSN, APRN-BC, received the "Power of One Award," presented each year to an individual in Alabama who has helped shape policy for improved practice of advanced practice nursing throughout the state. Deupree is an alumna of the school and Director of Professional Development. She co- founded NPAA and served as president in 2012 and 2013. While president, she championed the passage of Senate Bill 224 so that Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners and Certified Midwives in Alabama can prescribe for controlled substances.

Awards were presented at the 2014 Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama Annual Meeting at Edgewater Beach Resort in Panama City Beach, Fla. The Wiregrass NP Association sponsored the event.
