McMullan continues NBCRNA board role

University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Associate Professor and Nurse Anesthesia DNP Pathway Director Susan McMullan, PhD, CRNA, CNE, CHSE, will serve a second term on the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurses Anesthetists Board of Directors.

In this appointment, McMullan will serve as incoming Secretary/ Treasurer for NBCRNA, the credentialing body for the more than 57,000 CRNAs in the United States. NBCRNA develops and implements initial, continued and specialty certification and credentialing programs for nurse anesthetists, encouraging lifelong learning and promotion of the highest quality of care. Board members are all elected leaders in nurse anesthesia and related fields, and they are served in staggered three-year terms. McMullan’s term runs from 2021-2024.

“The NBCRNA is an innovator and leader in the field, and our focus is on the promotion of patient safety through high quality credentialing programs. I am very excited to help lead our profession as a member of the executive board,” McMullan said.

McMullan has received over $50,000 in research funding from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, including 2014 doctoral and 2017 post-doctoral fellowships, as well as a general research grant to study patient safety and to develop the first CRNA perceived workload instrument. Additionally, she has been awarded more than $500,000 in Nurse Anesthesia Traineeship Health Resources and Services Administration grant funding since her arrival to UAB in 2015. Finally, she is a 2021 recipient of the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists Award for Outstanding Advocacy and Service to the CRNA Profession.
