Ninety-four BSN students in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing recently joined other UAB undergraduates from across campus at the Eighth Annual UAB Undergraduate Research Expo on April 10, 2015 to present results from their independent research projects.
Three groups of students from the School earned awards from Expo organizers for their presentations:
• Meghan Pattison, Deandra Randaw, Steven Ingram, and Audrey Vickers for their poster presentation, "Beads for Better Bodies" (advisor: Laura Debiasi, DNP, MSN, MPH, CRNP)
• JaLynda Edwards, Nick Schilling, Kami Glass for their poster presentation, "Health Promotion for the UAB Primary Care Clinic at the Foundry" (advisors: Cindy Grimes-Robison PhD, RN, FNP; Cindy Selleck PhD, RN, FNP, FAAN; and Kim Davey, PhD(c), MBA, MA)
• Emily Bray, Sara Kimbrell, Ciera Ingram, for their poster presentation, "Cultivating Cultural Competence: A Breast Health Program for Latinas" (advisors: Jennifer Bail, BSN, RN; Timiya Nolan, MSN, ANP-BC, CRNP, Silvia Camata, RN, MPH; and Karen Meneses, PhD, RN, FAAN)
The nursing students' presentations were inspired by their experiences in the "Concepts of Community Health Nursing" course. The course focuses on the nurse's role in the community and 29 of the school's 30 partner agencies are in Jefferson, Hale and Tuscaloosa county.
Students were responsible for conducting a community assessment for the agency in which they are placed to determine the agency's needs. Based on the assessment data and input from the partner agency, the students then planned and implemented a Community Impact Project.
The following UAB School of Nursing faculty and staff served as advisors for students for the successful completion of their
projects: Cathy Boardman, MSN, RN; Laura Debiasi, DNP, MSN, MPH, CRNP; Veranda K. Melton, MSN, RN, ALA; Sherita Etheridge, MSN, CRNP, CPNP-PC; Sallie Shipman, EdD, RN, CNL; Shannon Polson, MSW, LCSW, PIP, MSN, RN, CNL; Melanie Gibbons Hallman, DNP,CRNP, CEN; and Cindy Grimes-Robison, PhD, RN, FNP.
Overall, more than 300 UAB undergraduate students made more than 200 presentations at the annual Expo. The categories included arts and humanities; biological, life, and physical sciences; business, financial, and international studies; social, behavioral and health sciences; and service learning.
