University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Associate Professor and Director of the Dual DNP-PhD Pathway Edwin Aroke, PhD, CRNA, FAAN, has received the 2022 Mitchell Max Award for Research Excellence from the National Institutes of Health Pain Consortium.
This award recognizes the best poster presentation at the NIH Pain Consortium Symposium and is named in honor of Mitchell Max, MD, for his lifetime contribution to pain research.
Aroke received the award for his presentation, “Genomic Pathways Enriched by Differently Methylated Genes are Linked to Racial Disparities in Chronic Low Back Pain.”
“Pain research is a team sport, and this honor is a tribute to the multidisciplinary team of mentors, collaborators and trainees I’ve had the good fortune to work with at UAB,” Aroke said. “I’m also delighted that this award recognizes the pioneering work we are doing to understand and help eliminate pain disparities.”
Aroke’s research program examines the mechanisms that cause and sustain chronic pain and racial pain disparities to address racism in pain management and research. His current project is funded by a $1.7 million, four-year R01 grant from the NIH, and he has received numerous awards recognizing his research.
