Eye-opening research

Rosetta Norman never thought she would end up with a passion for research or taking care of adults. The second-semester BSN student plans to be a NICU nurse once she graduates, but joining a faculty member’s research team has opened her eyes to more career possibilities and might just change her mind about the age of her patients.
UAB Hospital Interim Chief Nursing Officer Terri Poe, who earned her BSN from the UAB School of Nursing in 1986 and her DNP from the School in 2013, has been named the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Associate Vice President.

Life-saving research

Dr. June Cho dreams of giving preemies a better start. It is well known that testosterone is the primary hormone that increases bone and muscle mass as males grow. But could the very thing that strengthens boys during adolescence also be responsible for weakening them during infancy?
June Cho has been awarded a five-year, $1.72 million R01 grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Development to study testosterone and cortisol levels in infant health and development.
Deuk Kyung Kim and Seung Min-Lee, nursing students from Wonju College of Medicine, at Yonsei University, South Korea, participated in a competitive two-week exchange program at the UAB School of Nursing.  The students worked closely with mentor Dr. Youngshook Han from February 3 until February 14.

Maria Shirey, Ph.D., RN, FACHE, FAAN, assistant dean for clinical affairs and partnerships and professor in the Department of Community Health, Outcomes and Systems in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing, has been elected president of the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) for the 2013-15 term. Shirey began serving in that role on July 1 after having served as president-elect from 2011-13.

UAB School of Nursing Professor Marie Bakitas has received a four-year, $720,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to study whether a phone-based palliative care intervention can help reduce access disparities for veterans, minorities and patients from rural areas who have advanced cancer.

Deborah Kirk Walker, D.N.P., assistant professor in the UAB School of Nursing has been named a Fulbright Senior Specialist by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board

The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing has received a three-year, $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to help put more psychiatric nurse practitioners into the workforce, and for interprofessional education for both nurse practitioners and health informatics professionals in the use of technology to manage psychiatric conditions.
