Enriching educational and professional development experiences for UAB nurse anesthesia students

Amy Neimkin believes in giving time, resources to benefit next generation of CRNAs

Amy Neimkin, DNP (2010), MBA, CRNA, says she has always believed in the importance of giving back. As a supporter of the UAB School of Nursing’s Nurse Anesthesia Program Support Fund, she enriches the educational and professional development experiences of current and future UAB nurse anesthesia students.

Neimkin AmyDr. Amy Neimkin“I enjoy supporting the nurse anesthesia profession through volunteering my time and by supporting our students through mentorship and donations to their quality education,” she said. “After all, our students are the future of our profession.”

Gifts to the Nurse Anesthesia Program Support Fund make it possible for several UAB nurse anesthesia students to attend the Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) every year. The fund also supports innovative learning opportunities, technology updates and research experiences.

“Being a CRNA has afforded me a wonderful career and many varying opportunities with the profession itself,” said Neimkin.

She currently serves as Federal Political Director for the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists, a post she has held since 2009, and was named “Federal Political Director of the Year” by the AANA in 2015. In this role, Neimkin coordinates grassroots legislative lobbying efforts and keeps association members informed about legislative issues with potential ramifications on CRNA practice.

Having taught graduate coursework and served as a clinical instructor and preceptor at UAB, Neimkin enjoys introducing students to the political process. “It is key to our practice,” she said.

Neimkin is also the Alabama representative to the Coalition of Patient Rights, which comprises more than 35 organizations representing a variety of licensed health care professionals. Her inspiration to become involved in health care policy began during her time as a Doctor of Nursing Practice student at the UAB School of Nursing.
