NACADA is the global community for academic advising and presents awards to honor individuals and institutions that make significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising within higher education.

McLain has more than 20 years of classroom experience with undergraduate education. She has led the development of innovative nursing curricula to prepare new nurses to meet client needs in a changing health care environment.

“I’m thrilled to be recognized by NACADA,” McLain said. “Advising is an important faculty responsibility. To be recognized by NACADA, an organization that promotes excellence in student advising in higher education, is a such an honor.

“Advising students, especially non-traditional students such as Veterans, is very rewarding. Non-traditional students have many obstacles that potentially can impede their success,” McLain continued. “I believe that all students deserve the opportunity to succeed and approach my advising in that manner. Non-traditional students often need the guidance and encouragement to empower them to believe that they can complete their degree.”

McLain also us a UAB School of Nursing alumna. She earned her PhD in Nursing from the School in 2004.
