One of the founding members of the Board of Visitors in 1992, Anita Smith has had a front-row seat for the health care revolution that has taken place in Birmingham and around the state over the past five decades.

Since its founding almost 23 years ago, the Board of Visitors has had outstanding leadership. The following profiles honor those dedicated individuals who have wisely led the Board thus far on its journey of supporting the UAB School of Nursing.

For 27 years, Rita Ingalls Spencer knew the fulfillment of taking care of children and adolescents at the Birmingham-based children’s medical center now known as Children’s of Alabama.

The 2014 No-Show Ball fundraiser hosted by the Junior Board of Visitors (JBOV) was a success, exceeding the goal set by JBOV members. 

The Junior Board of Visitors (JBOV) welcomes new members Elizabeth Riddle, Kelli Fleming, Tim Hennessy, Jr. and Ken Taylor.

For 34 years, Jack W. Trigg, Jr., MD, practiced internal medicine in the Birmingham area. He was a member of a group practice that long was called Southside Internists and then, following a merger with another group Southview Medical Group.  

During those years Trigg developed a deep appreciation for roles that nurses play in patient care. “Who really looks after you when you are sick and in the hospital?  The nurses,” he said. 

The Board of Visitors (BOV) has a new member –Eileen S. Meyer –and Eileen and husband Dr. Bruce E. Burns, a BOV member since 2012, have added a fundraiser to ways they support the UAB School of Nursing.

UAB School of Nursing graduate student Bryan Wilbanks has been selected to receive the CertifiedBackground.com and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing scholarship based on merit and demonstrated leadership skills.

Florence Nightingale, indisputably the founder of modern nursing, left countless gifts to her profession, including a collection of 50 letters and more preserved in the UAB Historical Collections. Copies of these are on permanent exhibit in the UAB School of Nursing.
