It is with great pleasure that the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB announces the Francisco Robert, M.D., Clinical Investigator Award. This award will secure the mentoring and development of the next generation of clinical cancer investigators at UAB, UAB Medicine and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“I can think of nobody better to name this award after than someone who has dedicated 50 years of his life to the care of cancer patients,” said O’Neal Cancer Center Director Barry Sleckman, M.D., Ph.D. “Dr. Francisco Robert has worked tirelessly to bring patients the very best treatment opportunities through clinical trials and has given so much of himself to mentoring junior faculty who are learning to conduct clinical trials. This award is a fitting tribute to Dr. Robert’s commitment.”

Robert received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Puerto Rico in 1969. After completing his medical residency in Puerto Rico, he began his medical oncology fellowship at UAB in 1974, just one year before UAB’s Cancer Center became one of the first eight institutions to receive a National Cancer Institute designation.

He returned to Puerto Rico in 1976 where he was later promoted to associate professor. In 1990, he made his final move back to UAB where he served as an associate professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology & Oncology.

Robert has remained at UAB since then and was promoted to professor in 1995. He has published more than 70 papers in the area of clinical cancer research and has had more than 100 clinical trials sponsored through collaborations with pharmaceutical companies.

He is currently the leader of the O’Neal Cancer Center’s Phase I Clinical Trials Program and specializes in treating patients with lung cancer. In addition to all of this, his door is always open, and he is always available to junior faculty who have an interest in and are passionate about running clinical trials.

The request for applications for the first Francisco Robert, M.D., Clinical Investigator Award will be published soon on the Funding Opportunities page. The first recipients will be announced in early in 2021.
