Dr. Keshia Elder is originally from Columbia, South Carolina and graduated from Clemson University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Teaching: Mathematics. While attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry, Dr. Elder received a Health Professions Scholarship from the United States Navy. She graduated from UAB in 1998 with her Doctorate of Optometry and her Master of Science in Vision Science. After graduation, Dr. Elder served five years in the Medical Service Corps in the United States Navy.

Dr. Elder has held several academic positions prior to rejoining the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. At the UAB School of Optometry, Dr. Elder teaches in the Clinical Management Course. In addition, she is the Director of the Externship Program. Dr. Elder’s research interests include ocular manifestations of autoimmune disorders, the effect of various contact lens materials and corneal surgeries on dry eye syndrome and health disparities related to primary eye care.

Dr. Elder is a member of the Lectures and Workshops Committee for the American Academy of Optometry, the ASCO Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee and the ASCO Culture Task Force. She also serves on the editorial board for Optometric Education.
