What criteria will be used to evaluate the proposal?

In evaluating the proposals, the following criteria will be considered:
  • Alignment with UAB’s strategic priorities in Forging the Future;
  • Defined metrics of success and feasibility of achieving high impact results;
  • Opportunity to gain pre-eminence for UAB;
  • Qualifications of the principal investigator(s) and the leadership team;
  • Potential to utilize and build university strengths;
  • Potential for engagement of, and benefit to, many/all facets of the university – research, scholarship, teaching, service, patient care, student life, community engagement, economic development, alumni, athletics, etc.;
  • Strength of the implementation plan;
  • Realism of the budget;
  • Ability to leverage other funds to support the project and likelihood to achieve sustainability;
  • Support for the project by relevant senior leadership (e.g. Deans, VPs);
  • Strength of the Sustainability plan.

How many proposals will be awarded per year?

We do not have a defined limit at this time.

When are proposals evaluated?

Proposals are evaluated on a quarterly basis. There are four quarters:
Quarter 1: January 1 through March 31
Quarter 2: April 1 through June 30
Quarter 3: July 1 through September 30
Quarter 4: October 1 through December 31

Who is evaluating the proposal?

Proposals are reviewed initially by a subcommittee of the Budget Advisory Committee. Using the criteria discussed above, this subcommittee will bring forward outstanding proposals for discussion and review by the President’s Cabinet. Based on the feedback from the President’s Cabinet and in consultation with the President, a decision about the proposal will be made.

If successful, when will the funds be made available?

Funds will generally be available in the next quarter after a funding decision is made. SIF resources that may not be used in a given year will carryforward to the subsequent fiscal year. These projects are expected to move the needle for the institution in a strategic way.

Can the funds be awarded over multiple years?

Yes. Proposals can request funding for 1-3 years.

Will feedback be provided on the proposal?

Yes. Participants will receive one of the following funding decisions and a brief narrative indicating the reasons for the decision:
  • Funded
  • Funded with stipulations
  • Revise and resubmit
  • Unfunded
