UAB HELP Phones

UAB HELP Phones

There are over 490+ Help Phones conveniently located throughout the UAB Campus. These phones are in building hallways, elevators, parking lots, parking decks, between buildings and in various remote areas. They are a direct link to the UAB Police and Public Safety Department and are monitored 24 hours a day. To operate a Help Phone that is located in a metal box, just open the door and pick up on the handset. To operate the small yellow Help Phone boxes with the red button, just push the button once and wait for the dispatcher to answer. To operate the Help Phones located in elevators, just open the phone panel and lift the handset up and wait for the dispatcher to answer.

Blazer Express Safety Escort

Blazer Express Safety Escort

The Blazer Express is available Monday – Friday, 5:30am until 12:00 midnight. If you are on campus during these hours, we highly encourage you to use this service. The Blazer Express Safety Escort is an on-demand van service for UAB students, employees, and authorized visitors, available through Parking and Transportation Services by calling 205-934-8772. The service is available daily from 9:00 pm – 5:30 am. UAB students and employees must present their UAB ID badge to be transported. Visitors will be allowed to use the service when accompanied by a card-carrying student or employee.

Personal Safety Awareness

New Student Orientation; Resident Hall Security; Crime Prevention Presentations; Architectural Design and Security Surveys; Property Identification; and Crime Prevention Publicity A routine number of articles about the department's crime prevention efforts are regularly published in two campus newspapers and often in the Birmingham News and local news median with a collaboration between UABPD's communication specialist Ashley Silver and UAB's University Relations.

Rape Aggression and Defense Training

Rape Aggression and Defense Training

We offer Rape Aggression Defense training (R.A.D.). The classes are a woman's self-defense and awareness training program developed by Larry Nadeau and his staff in Virginia. It is an internationally recognized, proactive, physical defensive tactics-training program provided to females around the nation. After much research and extended efforts, the UAB Police and Public Safety Department adopted and is now routinely providing this program as a service to the female population of the UAB community.

Sexual Assault Awareness

The UAB Police and Public Safety Department routinely conducts various educational programs to make both students and employees aware of and to attempt to prevent sexual assault. The following are some of the programs conducted by the department: safety and security programs during freshman orientation, sexual assault programs for groups of students throughout the year, concentrating on the student residences, Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Courses, self defense and avoidance courses, alcohol and drug awareness programs, generalized safety and security programs, concentrating in the residences, fraternities, and sororities, and other personal protection programs designed for traveling faculty and staff.

One of the UAB Police and Public Safety Department's highest priorities is to ensure that a victim of any crime receives the greatest possible attention, in order to foster the least amount of negative impact of the crime against the victim or his/her family. In order to accomplish this, the UAB Police and Public Safety Department takes every step possible to meet the needs of the victim in accordance with all federal, state, and local guidelines as well as utilizing all available resources for assistance.
